Whelping Supplies

Once the Whelping Room is set up, begin gathering the general whelping supplies and keep these nearby to assist mother-to-be safely deliver her puppies.

We own several reference books detailing the use of whelping supplies.

 

Gram scale, alcohol, Q tips, Vaseline

Scale - To weigh puppies

Alcohol - To sterilize instruments

Q tips - To add Betadine to halt infection, i.e. end of cut umbilical cords

Vaseline - To ease insertion of thermometers

Betadine, Gauze and towels, dental floss, sharp scissors,  digital and rectal thermometer, suction tool

Betadine - Stops infections, i.e. end of cut umbilical cords

Gauze - Use to apply alcohol

Thread or Dental Floss - To tie off umbilical cords (1" from tummy)

Sharp Scissors - To cut umbilical cords

Thermometers - Monitor temperatures of mom, pups and whelping box

Suction tool - To remove liquid from lungs and nostrils    of newborn pups

We keep a good supply of clean, white washcloths with our supplies and we will use these to rub, clean and dry each newborn pup.
