We Chose Our Family Room
When you first learn your bitch is expecting, begin thinking about where she will be comfortable whelping and raising a healthy and happy litter.
Also give thought to your role as nursemaid, and the needs of any other family members (human, canine & feline.)
This area should be relatively quiet and provide privacy for the bitch. Separate the area from other parts of the house and pets using temporary gates if necessary.
The area should be a place where you, as nursemaid, will also be comfortable. You will want to be able to spend many, many days there, as well as a dozen or more nights.
Indoor dogs, like ours, can be comfortable whelping in a bedroom, the kitchen or dining room, a family or living room, a utility room or a room in the basement (but only if she is very familiar with it.)
Also keep in mind that she must have easy access to food, water, and a place to do her business.
As we have other pets, we elected to set up the Whelping Room in our family room. Other pets were relegated to the kitchen area only.
