The Whelping Box

Many different types and styles of whelping boxes exist, and they can be purchased from a dog supply store, or even home-made if you're handy.

We like this old tried and true type.  Scotties are a smaller size dog of approximately 20 lbs.  This is a good size for the breed and their puppies. The whelping box should be cleaned and sanitized before introducing it to mom.

The bottom is slightly raised off the ground and the inside floor is covered with self-stick linoleum square tiles.

Notice the railing around the inside walls.  This helps to protect the puppies from being accidentally suffocated by mom.

We placed the Whelping Box in our family room against an open wall, away from drafts and traffic.
